Two Digit Subtraction With Regrouping

Each digit of a number in our number system has a different place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc)

Always subtract within the same place value column when subtracting numbers.

Subtraction is to find the difference.

Now, let us take one simple example with two digit subtraction.

 Example:

Step 1

Write the problem in the columns.

First, subtract the ones

 Subtract the bottom ones place digit from the top ones place digit (6 – 9).

 Here, regrouping the number to make the top value larger.

Regroup 1 tens into 10 ones, so that the 6 becomes 16.

Then

16 ones – 9 ones = 7 ones.

The 7 is placed below the line in the ones place column.

Next, subtract the tens.  

The top tens place value becomes 4 after practicing subtraction with regrouping one tens from it.

 4 tens – 2 tens = 2 tens.
