Teaching 3 Digit Addition Math Regrouping

Each digit of a number in our number system has a different place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc)

Always add up the numbers within the same place value column.

Addition is to find the total sum of the numbers in same place value.

Addition with regrouping requires kids to use manipulative to demonstrate how they move “ten” ones over the tens column and so on.

 

Example: Add two numbers using vertical form:

Step 1:

Write the problem in two column place value: ones, tens.

Then add the ones column.

8 ones + 8 ones = 16 ones

There cannot be more than 9 ones in the ones column.

So. regroup the numbers become 1 tens 6 ones.

Move the ten ones into the tens column, as picture above.

 

Step 3:

Next, add the tens column.

1 tens + 5 tens + 7 tens =13 tens.

There cannot be more than 9 ones in the tens column.

So. regroup the numbers become 1 hundreds 3 tens.

Move the ten tens into the hundreds column, as picture above.

Step 4:

Then, add the hundreds column.

Teaching 3 Digit Addition Math Regrouping

1 hundred + 6 hundreds + 2 hundreds =9 hundreds.

You will get the answer of 936 with this math tutoring teaching 3 digit addition math with regrouping.
