Subtraction With Regrouping Lesson

If you are looking for a good example to teach your kids math subtraction with regrouping that really works – and I will prove it to you in a moment – then please read this message very carefully. It will be the most important information for subtraction with regrouping lesson you read all year.

As you know each digit of a number in our number system has a different place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc)

Always subtract within the same place value column when subtracting numbers.

 Example:

6

8

2

3

-

4

7

6

9

Step 1

Write the problem in the columns.

Step 2

First, subtract the ones

Subtraction Regrouping Lesson

Subtract the bottom ones place digit from the top ones place digit (3-9).

Here, we need to regrouping the number to make the top value larger.

Regroup 1 tens into 10 ones, so that the 3 becomes 13.

13 ones – 9 ones = 4 ones.

The 4 is placed below the line in the ones place column.

Next, subtract the tens.

Subtraction Regrouping

The top tens place value becomes 1 after subtraction with regrouping one tens from it.

Regroup 1 hundreds into 10 tens.

10 tens + 1 tens = 11 tens,

11 tens – 6 tens = 5 tens.

Then, subtract the hundreds

Subtraction Lesson

The top hundreds place value becomes 7 after subtraction with regrouping one tens from it.

7 hundreds – 7 hundreds = 0 hundreds

Finally, subtract the thousands.

6 thousands – 4 thousands = 2 thousands.

In this lesson, we use subtraction with regrouping method to solve the problem that is 6823 – 4769 = 2054
