Subtraction Math Word Problems

Subtraction is a process of finding the difference between two numbers.

In subtracting one number from another, arrange the numbers according to the place values

and carry out the operation column by column from right to left.

When two or more numbers are to be

subtracted successively, it must be

carried out in steps subtracting two numbers at a time.

There are few steps involved in order to solve

subtraction math word problems.

Solving Subtraction Math Word Problems

Step 1 Read the math word problem.

Step 2 Understand the problem – by asking the questions using Polya’s 4 Step Model.

For example: What is given?

What is asked for?

What operation are you going to use?

What operation is needed?

Step 3 Devise a plan

For example: Adding the numbers first, then do the subtraction.

Step 4 Carry out the plan or calculation.

Step 5 Check the solution

 Example

A factory produced 250 400 of calculators in January. In February,

it produced 66 000 less than in January.

Find the number of calculators produced by the factory in February.

Step 1: Read the problem.

Step 2: Understand the problem

Given: January -250 400 of calculators were produced.

February – 66 000 less than January were produced.

Find: The number of calculators produced in February.

Step 3: Devise a plan

Use subtraction (-)

Step 4: Carry out the plan

250 400 – 66 000 = ?

250 000

- 66 000

 184 400

184 400 of calculators were produced in February.

Step 5: Check the solution

Subtract the number of calculators produced in February from the number of

calculators produced in January.

250 000

- 184 400

   66 000
