Decimal fractions are commonly expressed without a denominator, the decimal separator being inserted into the numerator (with leading zeros added if needed), at the position from the right corresponding to the power of ten of the denominator in math.
e.g., 8/10, 83/100, 83/1000, and 8/10000 are expressed as: 0.8, 0.83, 0.083, and 0.0008.
Subtracting Decimals
When subtracting decimal numbers from decimal, write the numbers in vertical form.
Example: 36.04 – 3.7
To subtract decimals. Align the decimal point and follow the rules for adding or subtracting whole numbers, placing the decimal point in the same column.


When subtracting a decimal number from a whole number. Change the whole number to decimal number.
Example: 47 – 2.36 =
To subtract decimal numbers, align the decimal points and follow the rules for adding or subtracting whole numbers.

It is important to remember that when subtracting decimals, each number must be placed to align the decimal points.
When necessary, zeros are used as place holders to make this possible. Then the operation of subtraction is performed.
