Place Value Kids With Comparing The Numbers

Every place in a numeral has a value. The value of each digit depends on its place in the numeral. In the decimal number system each place in a numeral is ten times the value of the place to the right.

The first place on the right has the value of one, in the ‘ones’ position.

The next place value to the left is 10, in the ‘tens’ position.

The next place value is 10 X 10, or the ‘hundreds’ position.

Working to the left the next position is thousands, then ten thousands, then hundred thousands, then millions, and so on.

The place value of a 7 digit number are Ones (O), Tens (T), Hundreds (H), Thousands (Th), Ten Thousands (T th), Hundred Thousands (H th), Millions (M).

Place Value Kids

Two numbers can be compared by counting the number of digits and looking at the place value.

(i)                Always compare the digits start from the left to right.

(ii)              Count the number of digits in the numbers. The one with more digits has greater value than the other one.

For example 428 125 is greater than 28 125.

(iii)       Check the first digit that on the left in each number. The number with greater digit is the bigger number.

For example 820 258 is greater than 120 258.

(iv)           If the first digit on the left of two numbers are the same, then compare the second digit of both numbers. The number with the greater second digit is the number with greater value than the other one.

For example 128 000 is greater than 118 000.
