Introduction to Numbers

Numbers play an important role in our lives. How many members are there in your family? How many pupils are there in your school? How much money do you have? What’s the distance between your school and home? These and almost all other situations around us deal with numbers.

The number system varies from one civilization to another, and there were many number systems used by different civilizations. One of the major advancement in math was the use of numerals to represent numbers. The use of numerals allowed number systems to be developed for recording large numbers.

Large numbers are necessary for us to understand, learn and describe things that are happening around us. Sometimes we need to use large numbers which are bigger than thousands or even millions.

For examples, light can travel 299,792,458 m in 1 second. Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world with 8,848 m in height, and etc.

Therefore it is important that kids have to be exposed to number sense up to seven digits such as to name and write numbers, to determine the place value, to express whole numbers in decimals and fractions of a million, to compare number values and to round off numbers.
