Name & Write Numbers
- The numbers, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10…………99, 100, 101,……..99999, 100000…. are called whole numbers.
- Whole numbers are written either in numerals or in words.
- To name and write a number in words or figures, start with the largest place value from left to right.
- To learn to read the numbers, we have to group together the ten thousands and thousands, the tens and the ones.
For example 35,352 is read as “thirty five thousand three hundred and fifty two”.
- If there is one “Zero” in the number; omit the zero when reading a number with zero in between. For example 408 109 is read as “four hundred eight thousand one hundred and nine.
- A number can be expressed in the extended notation.
For example 268,549 = 200 000 + 60 000 + 8000 + 500 + 40 + 9
or
2 hundred thousands
6 ten thousands
8 thousands
5 hundreds
4 tens
9 ones
