A fractions is a way of representing part of whole or part of a group in math.

A fraction in math consist of a numerator and a denominator, the numerator representing a number of equal parts and denominator telling how many of those parts make up a whole.

However, when teaching kids how to add fractions, it is important to help the kids to visualize the fractions. Only then they will understand the fractions and be able to be confident in the process of understanding multiplying mixed fractions.

Multiplying Mixed Numbers

First Step:

Discusses on how to find 1/2 of 8.
• Provides each pair of pupils with 8 picture cards.
• Asks pupils to divide the cards equally into 2 groups.
• Question them, “How many picture cards do you have in each group?” (4 cards)
• Teacher explains that 1/2 of 8 is 4.

Method 1: Using diagram

Displays a picture of whole numbers as grouping sets of objects.

• Explains 1 1/2 x 100 × means “We want one and a half sets of 100”.
• Shaded the objects based on the portion; 1 1/2 groups of 100 objects.

  • Above diagram shows that a group consists of 100 objects.

  • 1/2 of a group consists of 50 objects.

  • So the total objects is 100 + 50 = 150
