Do You Know The Easiest Way To Learn Multiplying of Decimals in Math?

If you want to know the tips of multiplying decimals (and I mean really mean that!) then this could very well be the most important math website you will ever see.


The decimal numbering system uses ten symbols called digits, each digit representing a number in math.

These symbols are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The symbols are known as the numbers zero, one, two, three, etc.

By using combinations of 10 symbols, an infinite amount of numbers can be created in math.

Decimal fractions are commonly expressed without a denominator, the decimal separator being inserted into the numerator (with leading zeros added if needed), at the position from the right corresponding to the power of ten of the denominator in math.

e.g., 8/10, 83/100, 83/1000, and 8/10000 are expressed as: 0.8, 0.83, 0.083, and 0.0008.

 

Steps for Multiplying Decimals

In multiplying decimals it is important to Ignore decimals and multiply as before.

Let try the below examples:

A bus travels 1.5 km per minute. How far can the bus travel in 4 minutes?

We can solve the problem using
i repeated addition
1 minute = 1.5 km
4 minutes = 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 6.0 km

ii. Using number line.

Multiplying Decimals,

iii. We can also solve the problems by multiplying the numbers in vertical form.


Multiply Decimals

The answer is 6.0 km

Example 2:

1 litre of petrol costs $1.52. Find the total cost of 5 litres of petrol

i. Using repeated addition

Multiply Decimals

Solving :
$1.52 + $1.52 + $1.52 + $1.52 + $1.52
= RM7.60

ii. Solve by tabulating

Multiply Decimals

 

 

 

The answer is $7.60
