Fractions – What?

The word “fraction” comes from the
Latin word “fractus” which means “broken”.
Similarly, fractions are numbers that are broken into smaller parts. Knowing and using fractions are part of having a firm understanding of the important concepts of mathematics.

The concepts are not only used in
daily situations but are also required in all types of careers.
A doctor, an engineer, a teacher, an accountant, a lawyer, a designer, a tailor, a painter and everyone else use ratios and proportions which deal with fractions.

But Why Fractions Is Important?

There are many situations in our life encounters that cannot be described using whole numbers. For example, we cannot use whole numbers to describe how much a cake is left after one piece is cut and taken off. Neither can we use whole numbers to express what is left of an apple after a portion of it is removed. In reality, fractions are very important in practical situations where ratios and proportions are used such as in reading maps and graphs, in using recipes to estimate measurements and so on.
