It is important to understand the decimal system before analyzing decimal place value charts.

The decimal system is based on 10. It is an extension of the place value system of whole numbers. The decimal point separates whole numbers from numbers less than 1.
Pin up a decimal place value charts as shown.

Place value of a digit is the place of the digit on the place value chart.
The number of decimal places is the number of digits after the decimal point.

For example:
4.5 1 decimal point.
4.53 2 decimal point

This can be shown in the example below.
The place values and digit values for the decimal 42 394.56 are as follows.

The above number can be read as forty two thousand three hundred ninety four point five six
