In Fact, I’ll Show You on Adding and Subtracting Fractions of Math Without You Lifting a Finger, 100% Guaranteed!

If you have a headache in learning fractions of math then you simply cannot afford to leave this site without finding out how you can learn adding and subtracting fractions.

A fractions is a way of representing part of whole or part of a group in math.

A fraction in math consist of a numerator and a denominator, the numerator representing a number of equal parts and denominator telling how many of those parts make up a whole.

However, when teaching kids how to add fractions, it is important to help the kids to visualize the fractions. Only then they will understand the fractions and be able to be confident in the process of adding subtracting fractions.

Adding Subtracting Fractions

Step 1

Adding of fraction with unlike denominators

Example 1:

Find the total of 1 2/3 and 1 1/4

Strategy 1

Use diagram

1 2/3 + 1 1/4 =

Adding Subtracting Fractions

The instructions of addition.

(i) For whole numbers

One whole and one whole equals two. (1 + 1 = 2)

(ii) For fractions:

Draw 2/3 in a horizontal column and 1/4 in another fraction is a vertical column.

Join the figure of 2/3 and 1/4. Now we have 12 equal parts altogether.

Now we have two whole and eleven parts out of twelve parts shaded. We write it as 2 11/12.

Strategy 2

Add the whole numbers and the fraction separately.

Step 2

Subtracting of fraction with unlike denominators

Find the different between 2 2/3 and 1 1/2

Strategy 1

Adding Subtracting Fractions

The instructions of subtraction:

i) For whole numbers ;
* Cross out one of two wholes. (2 — 1 = 1). We have one whole left.
ii) For fractions;
* If the fraction figure is in a horizontal column, then we must draw the
subtracting column vertically across. Now we have 6 equal parts
altogether.
* To subtract 1/2 of 6 equal parts, we have to cross out 3 equal parts of
the shaded parts.
Now we have one whole and one over six parts left. We write it as 1 1/6
